Lost Carnival, According to Peridot
THE VETERAN YEAR
(There is a longer, slightly more detailed write-up of each pre-game stop Peridot was present for included with her app here. Some of the content has been retconed though, and those changes are all here in this post.)
It'd be something of an irony that an individual who has come to love the carnival so much got her start there as an unwilling sign-on, if Peridot hadn't already gone through basically the same thing regarding her permanent residence on Earth. All the same, she was far from pleased when she got nailed for using her metal powers to cheat at a game and earned herself a year and a day's worth of debt. Fortunately for Peridot, there was already a familiar face waiting for her at the carnival. Amethyst, a fellow gem from her own universe and one of her best friends, had earned herself a debt of her own a few months prior, and was in the process of working off her own contract.
Bolstered by the presence of good company, Peridot quickly grew to enjoy the carnival, marveling in the strange and wondrous worlds it introduced her to. Some of the shit she got into in that time included:
-Getting into magical fae drugs that wound up leaving her with sharp teeth and claws as her first physical changes
-Arguing with a bunch of smug wizards about the benefits of technology over magic. She managed to offend one so deeply that he attempted to jinx her, and he ears haven't recovered from the experience since.
-Getting extra confused about her gay feelings for Amethyst when said gem made briefly started flirting with a shape-shifting superhero, and the jealousy literally turned Peridot into a green-eyed monster.
-With time she also gains spikes on her knees, horns on her forehead, and a big 'ol tail.
LITERALLY everything changed When the Vampires Attacked. There's almost nothing that Peridot hates more than feeling useless, but that's pretty much what she amounted to in the face of the invading blood-sucking menace. Carnies were being slaughtered; it was all hands on deck, and Peridot tried to help by jumping into the fray, despite her lack of fighting ability. Overwhelmed in a moment of dire need, she experienced a sort of magical 'hulking out' and developed the rare ability to breath fire and channel it through her claws. But even after all that flash, she could do little to make an impact on the invader's numbers...
The following weeks after the invasion were difficult for every member of the carnival, and Peridot was no exception. Much of her time at the Summerlands and the Crossroads was spent recovering from what she had experienced. Amethyst's contract would soon be coming to a close, as would her own, and there was discussions of sticking around, signing on willingly this time.
The final factor in Peridot's decision to stay came when the carnival's previous Engineer finished up her contract and left, no longer willing to stay after all the carnage brought on by the vampires. Peridot has always been the sort that copes with stress better when she's given a job to focus her energies on, so applying for the vacant supervisory position was a no-brainer. Placed in a new position of authority, and with a second contract focused on improving the combat effectiveness of her metal powers signed, she eagerly awaited the next mass-recruiting event.
GAME START
With a new contract signed and a new job title secured, Peridot gladly shows up at the mandatory karaoke mingle sporting a great new sweatshirt that she picked up at the Crossroads to help convey to all the newcomers EXACTLY who she is. While at the party, she reunites with her best pal Steven and introduces herself to some of her new underlings, including Greg Universe.
Realm of Dreams
The carnival visits the Realm of Dreams, and Peridot basically does absolutely nothing of consequence other than to annoy the heck out of her sleep-deprived organic co-workers.
The Matrix
"The One" kind of becomes a misnomer when a bunch of different carnival members turn out to be able to produce the powers associated with the title while in the virtual realm. However, that didn't make it any less awesome to Peridot! The logic-minded gem had very little difficulty understanding how to manipulate the Matrix's code to her favor, and she decided to practice this ability by... encouraging people to throw things at her, so she could try and stop them with her mind.
All this over the top enthusiasm wound up backfiring on her though when the excessive use of her powers attracted the attention of some Smiths. During their efforts to evade capture and return to the safety of the carnival, Steven gets shot. Bearing all the guilt for the incident, Peridot basically bsod's during the recovery period.
Eventually she and Steven hash out their feelings about the incident and wind up crying on each other some, like emotionally functional people.
Interlude 1
Some time later, the Ringmaster calls all of her supervisors to meet her out in the woods so they can stare at a spooky pentagram she found on the grounds. Peridot suggests just blowing the darn thing up, not expecting the suggestion to be taken seriously.
